ABOUT THE PROJECT:

This story follows the Indigenous Venda people of Limpopo, South Africa, as they fight to protect ancestral land in the Vhembe Biosphere from destructive development. Led by Earthlife Africa, the movement defends land sovereignty, spiritual ties to nature, and Indigenous rights. Central to the conflict is the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone - thousands of hectares slated for industry, threatening culture, biodiversity, and livelihoods.

Shaping Policy: Earthlife Africa’s campaign against the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone combined legal challenges, advocacy, and community engagement, and made use of the film to help raise awareness about the multi-faceted issue. Starting in February 2022, their efforts led to a UNDP investigation, recognition from Limpopo’s Economic Development Department, and ultimately, in February 2024, UNDP withdrew support for the project, achieving a major policy victory.

Changing Minds: Earthlife Africa’s campaign raised awareness among local communities about the environmental and cultural risks of the MMSEZ, addressing initial support based on hopes the project would bring economic development. Through community screenings and outreach, they informed 150 key local stakeholders - including youth, women, and traditional leaders - shifting perceptions about the project’s impact on biodiversity and resources.

Building Alliances: Earthlife Africa’s campaign fostered collaboration between community members, traditional and religious leaders, and civil society partners. Positive responses from partners and funders strengthened the campaign’s reach and credibility, helping unite diverse stakeholders around a shared goal.
